How to Chase Career Dreams

5If you’re not satisfied with your current career path, make a change. It’s that simple. Really. If you can dream it and are willing to work for it, you can make it happen. It might take extra effort and long hours of training or moonlighting while you educate yourself about your dream job, but if you are committed to the idea, you can have a career that fulfills your mental, financial and other needs.     Make a list of the steps you will need to take in order to achieve your new career. If you are uncertain about what type of work would be fulfilling to you, make a list of your deep interests and careers that have to do with them.Do not quit your current job until you are able to ensure a steady income from the new career. This may mean that you will have to work two jobs or attend classes after work, as well as spend late night hours doing Internet career research.Gather all of the information you can about the career path you choose to pursue. Immerse yourself in the essence of all things about your new found career. Read books, blogs, newspaper articles that have to do with the new career. Take notes about what you read, and ask yourself questions about things you would like to find out more about. Study to increase the knowledge about your new vocation and also to focus your being on it.Do affirmations and visualize yourself becoming successful in the new career. Think about exactly what it is you hope to achieve and any goals you wish to attain with your new job. Be specific. Make a long-range and short-range plan to achieve the goals, and write it down on paper. Break each goal into achievable objectives, stepping stones to your ultimate purpose—the career—and begin doing the work to achieve each step.Talk about the new career to anyone that will listen. Make sure your family and friends understand that you will be under the radar for a while as you do the necessary work to achieve your goal. Tell everyone you meet about your career transition. You never know who will have the power to advance your career a step. Network in places where you are likely to meet others with similar interests.Build a resume that highlights your education and any previous relevant experience. Send your resume to anyone that might be able to advance your new career.Attend interviews and highlight your passion for the new careers, the fact that you have worked so very hard to make your dream a reality and the can-do attitude that brought you to your prospective employer.Be willing to take a lesser salary at first, even if it means doing part-time work somewhere else until you get your first raise. You may be considered “entry level” for a while, but with your determination, grit and willingness to chase your dreams, you are bound to be a success in your new career.
