Overview
Chantix is a drug prescribed by physicians as a part of a patient's smoking cessation plan. As with any prescription drug, some side effects are common and Chantix is not recommended for everyone.

How Chantix Works
Chantix (generic name, varenicline) works in the brain by blocking nicotine receptors and reduces the urge to continue smoking.

Common Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness and nausea. Mood changes occur when the patient quits smoking and can be related to taking Chantix.

Severe Side Effects
Severe side effects include impaired ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. Suicidal thoughts or behavior are another severe side effect.

Success with Chantix
Chantix should be used along with behavior modification and counseling to aid in smoking cessation.

Chantix Duration of Use
The recommended course of treatment is 12 weeks. Some patients will be prescribed an additional 12 weeks of treatment.
