How to Change the End Users for Printers

by Lysis
  • Overview

Windows network administrators have the option to assign printers to groups of people on the network. This is beneficial for networks that have private printers located in executive offices or departments. You can change the end-users who have the ability to print to printers using the print management tool included with any Windows domain server software. The print management tool uses the group policy for each department to assign and change end-user print permissions.
The print management tool assigns users to printer permissions.

  • Step 1

Click the Windows Start button and select "All Programs." In the list of menu items, select "Administrator Tools," then click "Print Management." This opens the print management tool that sets end-user permissions.
  • Step 2

Click the icon labeled "Print Servers." This expands a list of print servers on the network. Click the printer server that hosts the printing device that needs permissions set.
  • Step 3

Right-click the printer name and select "Deploy with Group Policy." Click the "Browse" button and select an existing policy, or you can press the "New" button to create a new policy.
  • Step 4

Check the box labeled "The users that this GPO applies to (per user)." To remove or edit users from this policy, click the "Edit" button. Click the "Ok" button to save the settings. The printer is now only available to the end-users contained within the group policy.
