How to Change a BMP to a JPEG

by Lysis
  • Overview

A bitmap (BMP) is an image file type that was common in older software packages. The JPEG format is currently more popular, so some users may need to convert a BMP to JPEG in order to use it in applications or web pages, for example. Windows Paint is a small program that ships with the Windows operating system and can be used to easily convert a BMP file to JPEG.

  • Step 1

Download the BMP file or save the file you want to convert to a location on your hard drive. If you've already saved the file to the hard drive, double-click the "My Computer" icon and navigate to the location of the BMP file.
  • Step 2

Right-click the BMP file and select "Open With." In the list of applications shown, select "Paint." Paint will start and load the BMP file.
  • Step 3

Click the "File" menu item and select "Save As." In the file-type drop-down box, select "*.jpeg" from the list of options.
  • Step 4

Select a directory to store the new JPEG file. After you've selected a location, click the "Save" button. The BMP file is now converted to JPEG and may be found in your chosen location.
