What Does a Certified Nurse's Aide Do?
Certified nurse's aides work in hospitals, homes for the elderly and other medical facilities. They take on a number of responsibilities in order to assist nurses and doctors with patient care and administrative tasks.
  • Sterilizing

An aide will clean patients' rooms, bed linens and any medical supplies such as treatment trays in order to maintain a sterile care environment.

  • Food and Medication

A nurse's aide distributes medication and meal trays to patients. Sometimes aides feed patients who require assistance or help them take medication.
  • Transportation and Movement

Nurse's aides assist patients who have trouble moving. Aides transport them in wheel chairs, help them to walk and turn bedridden patients over in order to reduce bedsores.
  • Routine Tests

Nurse's aides measure a patient's temperature, respiration and blood pressure, keeping records of this data.
  • Examinations

Aides dress and undress patients, as well as drape them for physical exams or treatments. An aide will assist during the exam by holding and handing instruments to the doctor or nurse and adjusting light.
  • Logistics

A nurse's aide responds to signal lights or intercom calls in order to identify a patient's needs. They also deliver messages, answer phone calls and assist hospital visitors.
