Bipolar disorder is a mental disease that affects millions of people every year. When it is diagnosed in children, it is known as early-onset bipolar disorder; it is more severe than that found in adults and teens.
Genetic

Children may develop bipolar disorder if it runs in their family. When children have parents or siblings with the condition, they are more likely to be diagnosed with it.

Structure

Another cause of bipolar disorder in children is an abnormal brain structure or brain function.
Neurochemicals

Neurochemicals play a big role in causing bipolar disorder. Those who suffer with the disease may have an offset of chemicals, causing neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin to work improperly in the brain.
Other Disorders

Children with other mental diseases, such as ADHD or anxiety, are more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This happens because of the brain's structure.
Events

A major factor contributing to bipolar disorder is life experiences. If a child experiences abuse or the death of a family member, he may develop bipolar disorder.
