How to Care for Old Dogs

Overview
Whether you've had your dog since his puppy days or have decided to adopt an older pet in need of a home, knowing how to care for an aging dog is important to ensure his continuing health and happiness. Older dogs will be slower, sleep more often and need regular visits to a veterinarian for checkups. Be sure to give your old friend the extra attention and care he needs at this stage in his life.

Step 1
Buy food meant especially for senior dogs at your local pet store or veterinary office. According to the Grey Muzzle Organization, the organs of older dogs become less efficient at processing nutrients as they age. The pet food found in most grocery stores is not as high in quality and not as easily digested by older dogs.

Step 2
Buy a leash for exercise or, if you already have one, be sure to use it as often as possible. Older dogs are slower and sleep more, but they still need exercise to battle weight gain, which can worsen arthritis.
-
Step 3
Call your local veterinarian and schedule checkups for your dog. Aging dogs are prone to cancer and liver or kidney diseases.
-
Step 4
Provide your dog with a padded, comfortable dog bed. Older dogs usually develop arthritis and have a hard time moving with ease after resting for extended periods of time. A bed will be kinder to your dog's joints.
-
Step 5
Brush your dog at least once a week to remove dirt and loose hairs, and to stimulate oil glands. Doing so will keep his coat healthy and clean.
