    PC cards are an older technology, but they can still be useful. Wireless adapter PC cards are available, and they can give an old laptop new life.
  • Description

    Many older laptops have PC card slots. It is usually a rectangular slot on the side of the laptop about the size of five credit cards stacked on top of one another. PC card slots hold PC cards (formerly called PCMCIA cards), which perform different functions and add different features to a laptop.

    Check the technical specifications of your laptop from its manufacturer's website. Go to the website and search for your laptop's model number. There are several kinds of slots on laptops that look similar. Some accept PC cards, others take Express cards or Mini Cards, and still others accept Half Mini cards.
  • Types

    PC cards are available to fulfill many functions. PC cards have been used as Ethernet adapters, wireless adapters, memory cards, TV Tuners and more.
  • Old Technology

    The computer industry has moved away from PC cards. USB devices are available that fulfill the functions that PC cards perform and are more widespread. It is an old technology, but if you have a laptop with a PC card slot, you can still find PC cards that will make your laptop Wi-Fi capable.
  • Finding a PC card wireless adapter

    Several manufacturers produce wireless adapter PC cards, and they are available at most computer retailers (online or brick and mortar) in the networking section. Before making a purchase, check to ensure that your laptop has the right kind of PC card slot.
