Overview
Free resources for those wishing to learn Spanish include library tools, websites, conversation groups and some classes. Even without paying for classes or learning materials, it is possible to get a good grasp on this useful language.
-
Library Resources
Your local library should have a number of Spanish resources like textbooks, reference grammars and travel Spanish books. If these resources are not available locally, you can ask for them through interlibrary loan. Be sure to select texts with accompanying audio and visual material, which keeps different parts of your brain active, allows you to hear natives speaking the language and can keep you more engaged in your studies. To make quickest progress, try for about an hour's worth of study every day, especially when you're just starting out.
-
Websites
Some good websites for learning Spanish online include speak7.com, studyspanish.com and lingolex.com. See Resources below for links.
-
Conversation Groups
Many towns with Spanish-speaking communities have either formal or informal Spanish conversation groups that might meet at coffee shops or community centers. These groups give you the opportunity to hear natives interacting in real time, to ask questions, to develop your listening comprehension and also to have your skills corrected before bad habits become ingrained.
-
Classes.
You may be able to find free Spanish classes at locations like community or adult-learning centers. Check your local paper and community billboards. Especially if you are in a field in which speaking Spanish might make you a better asset to your customer base, your employer may be willing to pay for you to take Spanish classes; inquire with your employer or human resources department to find out about these opportunities.
