Overview
Whether you are traveling or taking a trip to the veterinarian---whether it's a stormy night or a new baby in the house---your pet can show anxiety. Your pet might be restless, squirmy or whiny if he is in a situation in which he feels uncomfortable. Rest assured that you can calm pet anxiety naturally.

Step 1
Understand what causes pet anxiety. Pet anxiety can occur when pets are frightened, bored, anxious or isolated, usually as a result of being alone. Changes in the household, such as a new pet moving in, can cause anxiety. Traumatic events or certain stressors can create anxiety in a pet that usually has a calm temperament. This anxiety can result in destructive behaviors, such as chewing furniture, urinating or defecating in the house, or barking or howling persistently.
-
Step 2
Avoid showing stress around your pet. Pets can sense when you are stressed out, and it can affect their sense of well-being. If you are traveling with your pet, stay calm if he gets anxious. If there is a new pet in the home, change your anxious pet's daily routine as little as possible. If there is a storm going on, and your pet becomes anxious, talk quietly and firmly to him. Stay close and cuddle with him, so he can feel secure.
-
Step 3
Reward your pet for good behavior. When your pet exhibits calm behavior in the place of anxiety, reward her. Give your pet treats to reinforce his positive behavior.
-
Step 4
Keep your pet busy. Whether your pet is sitting in an animal carrier on a plane or at home alone during the day, give your pet something to play with, such as a chew toy, bone or ball. If your pet is occupied, he is less likely to become anxious.
-
Step 5
If you are leaving for a few days, introduce your pet to the sitter or kennel staff member. Give your pet a toy right before you leave or drop him off at the kennel. The toy gives him something to focus on, besides you leaving.
-
Step 6
If there is a storm, do not leave your pet outdoors. Bring your pet inside and stay close to him until he feels safe and secure again.
-
Step 7
If your pet is disturbed when people visit your home, monitor your pet's actions to make sure she doesn't bite the visitor. Talk calmly to your visitors, so that your pet can see there is no danger.
