Overview
Calculating your odds of success when playing Texas hold 'em is vital. It is good to calculate your pot odds, but it is even better to calculate your effective odds, which are the odds you get when you call a bet with one more card to come. Read on to understand how to make this decision.

Step 1
Ask yourself the question "How much money will I make if I hit my hand?" To answer this question, estimate how much money you will be able to extract from your opponent in subsequent betting rounds.

Step 2
Ask yourself the question "How much money will I lose if I don't hit my hand." Again, estimate how much money your opponent will most likely try to extract from you if they believe they have the best hand.
-
Step 3
Compare these two figures and reduce them to a ratio to achieve your effective odds. For example, if there is $75 in the pot but there is one more betting round where you will probably need $25 to call, you are getting 1 to 4 on your money.

Step 4
Determine what your odds are of making your hand and then compare it to the ratio of money that you will require to put into the pot. If you have better odds on the possible money to be made, then your effective odds put you in a position to see the hand through to the end.

- It is not necessary to calculate effective odds if you are heads-up and you or your opponent is all-in, since no more money can be put in the pot.
