Custer State Park is a wildlife preserve in the Black Hills of South Dakota covering more than 71,000 acres. Lodging is provided in four interconnected resorts on the property, each featuring a grand lodge surrounded by smaller rustic cabins.
  • The Park

A herd of about 1,500 bison roam freely in Custer State Park. A central feature of the park is Sylvan Lake, above which rise the rugged Needles rock formations. Nestled along the lake and among the hilly terrain are four sprawling lodges where visitors can stay. For those who want a more personal and private frontier retreat, there are the cabins.

  • State Game Lodge

All Custer Resort lodges are located in the hills. At the lowest elevation, 4,250 feet, is the State Game Lodge, which was sometimes the summer White House for Calvin Coolidge. Beyond the main building and among the ponderosa pines are six freestanding cabins. The smallest is a sleeping cabin dubbed the Honeymoon Cabin. It sleeps no more than two and does not have a kitchen. The largest, called the Senator's Cabin, sleeps up to 10 people comfortably. For 2009, prices start at $160 per night.
  • Blue Bell Lodge

The theme at the Blue Bell Lodge and its surrounding cabins is the West. Guests are treated to chuck wagon dinners, hayrides and western entertainment. There are six cabins here as well. Only one does not have a kitchen. Blue Bell cabins, depending on their size, sleep up to eight people comfortably. Prices start at $140 per night.
  • Legion Lake

Located at the water's edge, the Legion Lake cottages are a good base for a vacation spent swimming, hiking, picnicking and fishing. Fishing licenses are issued on site. Cottages here sleep from one to seven people and begin at $130 per night.
  • Sylvan Lake

The Sylvan Lake lodge and cabins are at 6,250 feet. Sylvan Lake lies a short hike below the lodge and above it looms Harney Peak, the tallest peak east of the Rockies. The seven cabins here accommodate up to 10 people. This is, perhaps, the best choice if you are traveling with a group because it features an auditorium suitable for a variety of group functions. Published rates are from $135.
  • Planning Your Trip

If you're thinking of a stay in the cabins at Custer State Park, consider whether you would like a housekeeping cabin with kitchen facilities or a sleeping cabin without such facilities. Cooking utensils and dishes are not supplied. Some cabins allow pets for an extra $10 fee. Linens and maid service are included and all lodging is non-smoking.
