How to Buy Pet Medications Online

by Mia Carter
  • Overview

Pet medications can be expensive when purchased from the veterinary clinic. Fortunately, there is an array of pet medication websites that enable pet owners to purchase pet medications online for a lower price.

  • Step 1

Obtain a written prescription for the pet medication from your veterinarian. This will look very similar in appearance to written prescriptions that your own physician provides.
  • Step 2

Get a 1-week supply of the medication from your veterinarian to allow for shipping of the medication from the online pet pharmacy. You don't want to pay extra for expedited shipping.
  • Step 3

While you're at the veterinary clinic, find out what your veterinarian would charge you for the pet medication you're seeking. In a few cases, your veterinary clinic will offer better prices than online pet pharmacies.
  • Step 4

Go home and comparison-shop by checking the prices of the medication on various pet medication websites, like Entirely Pets, Medi-Vet and the Drs. Foster and Smith websites (see Resources). Generally speaking, some of the smaller, less-well-known online pet pharmacies have better, more competitive prices on pet medication.
  • Step 5

Go through the normal online ordering process by adding the desired pet medication to your online "shopping cart," proceeding to checkout and paying for the medication using PayPal or your credit card.
  • Step 6

Provide the pet pharmacy with your pet's prescription for the medication. You will be given an order number and a fax number. Fax the prescription to the online pet pharmacy, accompanied by your order number. You typically have 24 to 48 hours to fax the prescription; otherwise, the order is automatically canceled.
  • Step 7

Keep your customer order number handy for future orders for refills on the same prescription.
