How to Breed Brackish Water Fish

Overview
Having an aquarium in your home can add a relaxing feature that is more like a piece of living art. But did you know that by breeding your fish you can also make them essentially financially self-sustaining? By breeding fish and trading or selling them to local retailers, you can keep your own piece of living art thriving.

Step 1
Select the brackish fish that you desire to breed while stocking your tank. If you can tell the males of the species from the females, than select two males and a female. If you can not decipher the species (as is the case with most brackish fish such as cichlids), then buy at least five fish of the same species. This will help ensure that you end up with a breeding pair.

Step 2
Provide the proper habitat. This varies from species to species, though most brackish species of fish desire water that is slightly higher in the alkalinity and pH scale than other fish.
-
Step 3
Provide adequate egg-laying sites. Most fish like to lay their eggs on flat surfaces, so providing plenty of flat areas such as pieces of slate or even household tile can greatly improve the chances of breeding.
-
Step 4
Separate the breeding pair. This step is not always necessary if you are dealing with more tame fish such as mollies. When dealing with more aggressive fish such as cichlids, however, separation of the breeding pair can help prevent other predatory fish within the tank from consuming the fry.
-
Step 5
Cull the fry to a grow tank. This is a tank with a low-flow filtration system that will prevent them from being sucked into the filter. This also is not always necessary but is a good preventive measure.

- Having a constant proper pH will help your fish breed faster.
Many things can trigger spawning in captive brackish fish. One of these is water changes, so change your water frequently. This will also improve the water quality in the tank.
