Overview
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 117 in 100,000 women in the United States will develop breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women with the exception of non-melanoma skin cancer. It is also a leading cause of death for people of every race.

Understanding the Risk
You must understand the risk involved with breast cancer and know that every woman is at risk. That risk increases with age. If you and seven of your friends lived for 90 years, there is a good chance that one of your will develop breast cancer. This makes your individual risk of getting breast cancer about 12 percent.

Reducing Risk
If you are at high risk for breast cancer, you can reduce your risk with preventative measures. Early detection is your best defense. Perform monthly self breast exams. Also, have you doctor perform a yearly breast exam. Depending upon your level of risk, it may be necessary to have these exams conducted more often. Begin yearly mammograms at age 40. Consult with your physician to set up an early detection plan that caters to your individual need and peace of mind.

Additional Factors for Reducing Overall Risk
Some lifestyle changes can also reduce the risk of breast cancer in women. Keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum. None at all is best. Participate in physical activities as often as possible. Avoid taking hormones. Keep your weight down as obesity plays a role in the risk of breast cancer in older women. Know your family's medical history and do not be complacent in regard to breast cancer risks and facts. If you decide to have children, breastfeeding them can further reduce your risk. Consider joining a support group where you can be held accountable for your health. Avoid any and all products containing estrogen, progesterone and pesticides. Be aware of the myths and know the truth. Educating yourself is your ally in addition to early detection. Maintain a smart diet that is low in fat and high in fiber.
