What Are the Benefits of Baby Sign Language?

Overview
Babies can usually communicate with parents from about the time they can nod "yes" and shake their heads "no." Unfortunately, babies have more needs than a simple nod can express. Sign language can help babies further communicate with parents and others, but it may take a while for them to learn.
-
Expressing Themselves
Using sign language helps a baby more accurately communicate thoughts and feelings before she is able to verbalize her needs.
-
Saving Time
Parents might find sign language to be a time saver when it comes to discovering their baby's needs.
-
Starting a Conversation
Knowing how to sign may help babies start conversations with parents and others rather than always being the one who is asked questions.
-
Start Early
Babies will probably be able to learn sign language as early as six months. Most babies can begin signing words at nine months.
-
Bonding
Sign language may promote stronger bonds between the baby and his parent. Trust is developed by the baby signing various needs and knowing the parent will meet them.
-
Vocabulary
Babies may develop a better vocabulary when they are introduced to words using both pictures and being shown the sign for the object.
