How to Become a Social Activist

by Joanna Reed
4Gay rights. Global warming. Animal testing. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the range of controversial issues in the world today. However, sometimes a certain injustice bothers you so much that you are compelled to take action. It can be difficult knowing where to begin. Here are some ideas on how to pursue social activism and truly make a difference, no matter how large or small.
How to Become a Social ActivistRead up on the issue, and do some of your own research. Choose a variety of sources like books, newspapers and journals to give you both the history of the issue as well as keeping you up-to-date on its status. This will also give you a multitude of viewpoints and perspectives, even the ones you disagree with most. It's important to know all the sides so you are informed. One example of a source dedicated to global issues is Social Justice: A Journal of Crime, Conflict and World Order.Join an organization dedicated to your issue and participate. While it's one thing to send a donation via mail, it's another to get out there in your free time and canvas a neighbohood, join a sit-in or walk in a peaceful protest. Even if it's just for a couple of hours a week, this is a great way to make a difference.Take a rational approach. Avoid appealing to emotion, especially when you speak to others about your issue. While displays of enthusiasm reveal the passion and candor behind your drive to become active, you will also need to be able to provide facts, statistics and real-life consequences if action is not taken on the issue. Don't make up answers if you don't know the answer. This reflects poorly on the cause and your authenticity.Avoid resorting to insults when someone doesn't agree with you. This will alienate people. The best way to reach those who are most difficult to convince is to listen to what they have to say. Don't interrupt. Let them speak their piece and then respond to their points in a clear, calm voice. If they interrupt you, remind them that they had their turn to speak; now it's yours.
Don't do anything illegal. While it is tempting when things do not seem fair, it will discredit your action more than it will help it.Social Activist Canvas Protesthttp://www.socialjusticejournal.org/Social Justice Journal
