Overview
A medical transcription training specialist has to be knowledgeable in the medical field, be comfortable with today's dictation methods in a high-tech world, and understand how to work with people who may have no medical background at all. It is a demanding job, but one that offers many rewards, including holding a position that will always have a need, as the healthcare industry grows rapidly.

Step 1
Take the appropriate college courses to put you on track for this career. You will need to take classes in medical terminology, pharmacology, basic medical knowledge, and others, as requirements can vary from program to program. You may also be required to take basic computer, keyboarding, and dictation courses, as most of the medical transcriptions done today are Internet-based and high-tech. Most community colleges and some online colleges offer these classes. Make sure you choose an institution that is accredited, as employers do look for this when interviewing candidates.
-
Step 2
Gain experience working as a medical transcriptionist (MT). This is almost always necessary before any reputable company would consider hiring you as a training specialist. Training others in this field requires your full understanding of how medical transcriptions work from top to bottom, and hands-on work in the field is the best way to attain this knowledge. Companies will have various requirements on how much experience one should have typing medical transcriptions before being considered to be a training specialist, but the norm seems to be about 5 to 10 years.
-
Step 3
Earn a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) certification. This is given through the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT), and signifies that you have completed a rigorous test to prove your knowledge in the medical transcription field. A CMT needs to update her certification every three years in order to maintain this status. The test costs $275, and is completely automated. A CMT has taken a big step to prove that she is capable of becoming a medical transcriptionist training specialist, and many employers take note of this fact.
-
Step 4
Apply for jobs where a training specialist is needed. Colleges (both online and on campus) may need someone to teach a class. Larger medical transcription companies often have a division where new MTs can get training, and they are often looking for training specialists. Scan through the job listings online through places like MT Daily or MT Stars. Also look through the classified section of the Sunday newspaper for job listings. The good news is that a training specialist can often times have a flexible schedule or sometimes even work from home. It really just depends on the job you apply for.
