Beauty Tips for Young Women

by John Zaremba
  • Overview

Some young women take right to makeup and hairstyling, while others struggle to find their look. Using makeup and other beauty supplies well is a matter of considering your features, finding what you like about them and using your products as tools to bring out the best in your appearance.
  • Eat And Drink Right

Diet plays a big part in beauty. Drink plenty of water every day. Lots of people say eight glasses is a good guideline, but the best advice is to make sure you're never thirsty (If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated.) Staying hydrated helps keep skin smooth, as does eating raw fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C.

  • Protect Your Skin

Use moisturizer daily, and keep your skin from drying. This includes using a humidifier, taking warm baths instead of hot showers, patting yourself dry instead of toweling off and using baby oil on your skin while it is still damp. Keeping your skin moisturized helps it maintain its luster and youthful appearance.
  • Select Your Products

Use makeup labeled non-comedogenic, especially if you've had trouble with acne. Heavy creams and other makeup can cause pimples and acne cysts. Those are not just unattractive; they're painful. Clean your brushes and applicators often; failing to do this can contribute to acne. Wear light makeup to school; it will save you time and aggravation. Choose a foundation that blends with your skin tone (you don't want your face and neck looking like they're two different colors). Use a pencil eyeliner; it looks more natural than liquid. Go for lip gloss instead of lipstick (or use lipstick of a sheer color.) Mascara gives your eyes more pop, and a touch of blush makes you look active and alive, even during early morning classes.
  • Stay Natural

Use minimal makeup; less truly is more. Whatever makeup you do use should call attention to your best features. If you like your eyes, try an eye shadow that compliments their color. Keep eyebrow plucking to a minimum; yanking out too many hairs and redrawing them with eyebrow pencil looks unnatural. If your eyebrows are too thick for your liking, pluck them a little and try obscuring them with your bangs.
  • Hair

Choose a cut that compliments your face and a color that compliments your style. Waves and curls work balance out the harsh lines of a square face. A short fringe cut can make a round face look longer. For a long face, try a bob cut. Girls with oval faces can wear any hairstyle well. If you like your natural hair color, leave it. If you think it's boring, try highlights or a full dye job. Youth is the right time to experiment with wild-colored hair.
