Basic Elements of a Business Plan
-
Overview
Business plans contain a variety of information. An executive summary is followed by details about the company, the competitive environment, action plans and expected results. The amount of detail for each section varies by type of company and its history.
-
Executive Summary
The executive summary provides an overview of your business, the need it serves and the credentials of the business owner. It should be one or two pages, never more than three.
-
Description and Offering
It's important to have an accurate and complete explanation of the concept, purpose and goals of the business followed by a description of the product or service you are offering, its advantages and pricing.
-
Marketing and Sales
The marketing and sales section explains your target market, its size and geography, the demand for your product or service and how you will attract customers.
-
Strategy
The strategy segment defines how you will implement the plan and includes a time line and budget.
-
Financials
The plan must have an actual or estimated income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flow.
-
Appendices
Marketing materials, research findings, legal documents and resumes complete the business plan.
