Baby Gifts for New Parents

by Danielle Herzog
  • Overview

It can be difficult to buy an appropriate baby gift for new parents. From books to booties, many gifts are adorable but perhaps not practical. A new parent will appreciate gifts that are helpful and can be used right away. Clothing, feeding and diapering are basic necessities for any baby, and there are specific gifts you can buy to help in those areas.
  • Bodysuits

The first item of clothing a baby usually wears is a simple cotton bodysuit or onesie. It is an undershirt that can snap between the legs or on the side of the baby's waist. Side-snap bodysuits are the most practical because they do not require the parent to have to put the article of clothing over the new infant's head. Most infants and small children do not enjoy clothing going over their head. Purchase onesies one size larger than the baby currently is because these items are usually made of cotton and can shrink when washed.

  • Washcloths and Burp Cloths

Most infants spit up often. A new parent can never have too many washcloths or burp cloths. This will allow parents to keep a small container of cloths in each room ready for when the need arises. Because an infant's mouth will be wiped often with the cloths, pick ones that are soft and won't hurt the baby's skin.
  • Baby Carrier Cover

Although baby blankets are cute and cuddly, they aren't practical for new babies because they shift, fall off and can be too big or small. However, baby carrier covers are much more practical. These covers attach to a baby carrier and zipper around the carrier to create a shell that warms and protects babies from cold weather. The covers come in many different materials and weights, as well as different opening sizes. Some covers will zip around completely, while others have a small hole in the facial area for the baby.
  • Diapers and Wipes

Similar to washcloths and burp cloths, new parents can never have too many diapers and wipes. Before purchasing diapers, ask the parents what type and size they use to be sure you purchase the correct brand.
  • Gift Cards

New parents will also appreciate gift cards to a baby store or department store so they can purchase certain items themselves. Giving a gift card shows new parents that you want to make sure they get exactly what they need.
