How to Avoid Microfilm Deterioration

by Heather Finch
  • Overview

In the early 1980s, the University of Michigan found the perfect storage space for their microfilm archives---an abandoned limestone mine located in Pennsylvania. Microfilm is a common method of archiving important documents, but the money, time and effort spent in transferring information to microfilm will be made null by improper storage. Avoiding microfilm deterioration requires proper storage methods that adhere to strict standards, though it does not require purchasing a limestone mine.

  • Step 1

Use a separate room for microfilm storage. The room should be away from the activity of your office and should not be somewhere people come and go frequently.
  • Step 2

Set up an air filtration system. Sulfur dioxide, ammonia, ozone, nitrogen oxide, peroxides, hydrogen sulfides and dust should all be kept to a minimum.
  • Step 3

Install a humidifier that can control the humidity to 30 to 40 percent.
  • Step 4

Keep the temperature around 65 degrees. The film will become brittle if stored in temperatures lower than this and can buckle or encourage fungus growth if any hotter.
  • Step 5

Wrap the microfilm around reels made from anodized aluminum, acid-free paper, stainless steel or peroxide-free plastic. The reels should be loosely wrapped and should not extend past 1/4 inch from the edge of the reel. Do not use rubber bands or tape to hold the microfilm to the reel.
  • Step 6

Put the reels in airtight microfilm containers. Label the container. Do not write on the microfilm.
  • Step 7

Store the reels in storage cabinets. If you choose not to purchase special cabinets for the purpose, make sure they are made from anodized aluminum or stainless steel. Wooden and plastic cabinetry can corrode the film.
