What Is an Animal-Skin Boot?

-
Overview
The term "animal-skin boot" refers to footwear made from animals that covers the entire foot and ankle region.
-
Types
Generally, animal-skin boots fall into three categories: boots made from nonmammalian animals, boots made from leather, and boots made from fur.
-
Boots Made From Nonmammalian Animals
Boots made from nonmammalian animals such as snakeskin, lizard, alligator, shark or eel are characterized by their relatively shiny, smooth texture. Some boots are made from feathers, most notably the feathers of the ostrich.
-
Boots Made From Leather
The most commonly worn animal-skin boots are those made from leather. This includes various colors and textures, such as suede. Leather is typically taken from cattle, though it is also taken from deer, pigs, goats and other animals.
-
Boots Made From Fur
Boots made from fur commonly make use of sheepskin or rabbit fur because of their warmth. Occasionally, colorful furs such as those of wild cats, oxen or canines are incorporated into fur boots.
-
Combinations
Many boots feature a combination of animal-derived materials. For example, some winter boots commonly feature suede on the top of the foot and fur on the upper portions or cuff of the boot.
