What Are Free to Air Receivers?
by Bill Bowman
-
Overview
Not all satellite television has a monthly fee attached to it. Free to air programs are just that: free digital television program downlinked from satellites to your home. An integral part of that system is the receiver.
-
Types
Free to air receivers are what you use to translate the satellite signal from the receiving dish, on its way to the television. These signals are usually in the MPEG-2 format.
-
Features
Free to air receivers are most commonly free-standing boxes that are placed on or near televisions, just as you would a cable or pay satellite television box. These boxes come with a number of the same features that pay satellite boxes include, such as a recorder, different types of audio and video outputs and a remote control.
-
You will need a coaxial cable to connect your receiver to your satellite dish, which will most probably be mounted on your roof.
-
Misconceptions
You will not normally be able to receive pay satellite transmission on this setup.
-
The cost of a basic free to air receiver can range from about $100 to about $450.
