According to depression-guide.com, a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) is a type of medication that blocks the chemical monomine oxidase from affecting the central nervous system. Because of this mechanism these drugs are used to treat depression, social anxiety, agoraphobia, panic disorder and borderline personality disorder.

MAOIs should be avoided in people who have a history of seizures, bronchitis, breathing problem such as asthma and heart problems including high blood pressure.

MAOIs can give people problems with vomiting, nausea and constipation.

Effects on the Nervous System
Low blood pressure, headaches and fainting have been reported in people taking MAOIs.

Sleep Problems
People taking MAOIs are likely to experience sleep problems, including drowsiness, insomnia and altered sleep patterns.

Other Side Effects
Patients have also reported sexual dysfunction, reduced tolerance for alcohol, dry mouth and chest pain with MAOI treatment.
