Overview
Hemorrhoids cause swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum and itching or discomfort. Mild cases of hemorrhoids may be relieved with over the counter crams and other products. Advanced cases of hemorrhoids require medical treatment.
-
Rubber Band Ligation
According to the Mayo Clinic, a doctor may cut off blood circulation to a hemorrhoid by placing one or two rubber band around it. The hemorrhoid usually falls off within a few days of the procedure.
-
Sclerotherapy
Patients may have a doctor inject a chemical into a hemorrhoid that shrinks the tissue and provides relief from symptoms.
-
Coagulation
Heat, infrared light or a laser may be applied to a hemorrhoid to cause it to become hard and smaller in size.
-
Hemorrhoidectomy
Hemorrhoids that cause bleeding may be removed completely with a surgical procedure called a hemorrhoidectomy. An anesthetic is normally used with this procedure.
-
Stapling
A hemorrhoid may be surgically stapled in order to block its flow of blood and reduce symptoms.
